should only be made within a line of insurance and these should be made with caution
in respect to validity because of the small numbers of candidates from many of the
schools tested in the period.
Two year license
Individual: Expires the last day of producer's or adjuster's birth month - odd/P&C, even/ LH&A.
Corporation: Expires 4/30 - odd/even year depending on line of authority (LHA - even, P & C - odd)
One year appointment - Expires every year on 4/30.
Prelicensing education and testing requriements help ensure a minimum level of knowledge about the products and services that producers offer to the public. In addition, license candidates must understand and comply with the laws and rules that govern insurance. You must meet the following requirements before appliying for a license. EXAMPLES: If someone applies for credit life, health and accident and credit property,
the fee would be $150 because all limited credit lines are $75 no matter how many
you apply for at a time.
If someone applies for credit life, health and accident, credit property and auto club, the fee would be $225 because there are two different types of lines, two are credit lines and the other is a limited line.
If someone applies for home service and industrial life, health and accident, the fee would be $110 because they are both limited lines.
Examination Procedures
Producer completes
LA Licensing Application and Exam Registration Form and forwards them to
Prometric with correct fees and the Prelicensing Certificate. Prometric
will send written notice to applicant of where exam may be taken and how to schedule
exam. Applicant failing exam may reschedule exam by submitting a new application,
registration, and fees to Prometric.
When applicant passes exam, license fee and application is to be forwarded to the
Insurance Department by Prometric. Company appointments and appointment
fees need not accompany license application and fees, but producer cannot act as
a producer of the company until appointment process is complete. The license card
is mailed by the Insurance Department to the mailing address indicated on the application.
Renewal will be mailed to the mailing address indicated on the application. Producer
is required by law to notify the Insurance Department of any change of address within
10 days of the change.
Company Appointments
Insurance company is to complete appointment form 1117B - LHA, 1170 - P & C, VA-3. Fee is $20 per appointment. Effective date
will be the date received by the Insurance Department. If an appointment disapproved
fees will not be refunded.
Variable Contracts
Producer must hold Life license to have a variable license. Submit a completed
application, $75 fee and CRD/U4 status report to the Insurance Department.
Limited License
Submit completed application with $75 fee for initial line of authority and
$35 for each additional line of authority to the Insurance Department.
There are 7 possible situations where agents move from one state to another state. Examples of the 7 situations are as follows:
(1) A person moving to Louisiana who does not hold a license in another state
-
must take pre-licensing education and an examination if they are applying for a line that requires an examination.
(2) A producer who is licensed as a nonresident in Louisiana moving from one state to another state (i.e.: Arizona to Texas) must:
- submit a state-to-state transfer form, letter of certification dated within 30 days if information is not current on PDB, $15.00, and return old license card.
If these requirements are not met within 30 days, the producer will be required to:
- submit a first-time application and $75 per line of authority applying for. If the license is expired then a reinstatement application and appropriate fees are required.
(3) A producer who is licensed as a resident of LA and moves to another state:
- must provide our office with a state-to-state transfer form, letter of certification if information is not current on PDB, $15.00 and return old license card within 30 days. (This will make them a nonresident in Louisiana.)
If these requirements are not met within 30 days, the producer will be required to:
- submit a first-time application and $75 per line of authority applying for. If the license is expired then a reinstatement application and appropriate fees are required.
(4) A producer that is not licensed in Louisiana that moves to Louisiana from a state where they held a license shall provide:
- a first-time application, letter of clearance dated within 90 days of the date they established legal residency and $75.00 per line of authority applying for. (They are exempt from exam and pre-licensing)
If the requirement is not met within the allotted time frame, the producer will be required to:
- take pre-licensing and exam when needed for the line of authority applying for.
(5) A producer that is licensed as a nonresident of Louisiana who changes to a resident Producer of Louisiana must:
- submit a first-time application, letter of clearance dated within 90 days of the date they established legal residency and $75.00 per line of authority applying for. (They are exempt from exam and pre-licensing)
If the requirement is not met within the allotted time frame, the producer will be required to:
- take pre-licensing and exam when needed for the line of authority applying for.
If the requirement is not met within the allotted timeframe, the Producer will be required to:
- take pre-licensing and pass the insurance licensing exam. It does not matter if the license is current or expired.
(6) A producer who previously held a license in Louisiana but never became a licensed non-resident of Louisiana and is within the 5-year reinstatement period must:
- submit a reinstatement form and $100.
(7) A Producer that was licensed as a resident of Louisiana and changes to a non-resident of Louisiana and moves back to become a resident of Louisiana and the license is current will need a State to State Transfer Form, Letter of Clearance, return license card and $15.00. If the license is expired then a reinstatement application, Letter of Clearance and $115.00 fee is required.
Renewal of License
The 2007 renewal period, the Department has not mailed paper
renewals. The Department now has available an electonic on-line renewal system.
Resident individual licensees and officers/employees of Resident Producer and Adjuster Agencies
can go to the Department of Insurance (DOI) website at www.ldi.state.la.us and utilize the online renewal process
found in the NEW INFORMATION area. Non-resident individual Producers
may renew online at www.nipr.com
Adjusters are expected to be able to renew online through NIPR in the near future.
A producer that fails to renew a license before the expiration date is entitled
to reinstate that license for a period of five years from the expiration date and
will be charged a $50 late fee. An Adjuster who fails to renew a license before
the expiration date is entitled to reinstate that license for a period of twelve
months (1 year) from the expiration date and will be charged a $150.00 reinstatement
fee (this includes a $50 reinstatement fee plus double the $50 renewal fee.)
Producers and Adjusters are responsible for notifying the insurance
company of reinstatement of license and producers must request a new appointment. Refer to
Birth Month Renewals
on Producers and Adjusters Page.
Renewal of Company Appointment
Renewal of company appointments is due on or before March 1 of every year. Each
Company is sent an invoice and instructions for printing their company renewal list.
The entire fee must be submitted. Renewal fee is $20 per appointment. Producers
cannot be canceled from renewal list. Renewal lists received after March 1 will
be charged a late fee of $10 per appointment.
Termination of Appointment
A producer license cannot be canceled by company, only appointment. To terminate
appointment, complete Company Cancellation Form and submit to the Insurance Department.
The date the cancellation is received by the Insurance Department will be the effective
date.
Continuing Education
A list of approved providers and other continuing education information
can be found on this website.
Continuing Education requirements shall not be required of a producer sixty-five
years of age or older, who has at least fifteen years of experience as a licensed
producer and who either is no longer actively engaged in the insurance business
as a producer and who is receiving social security benefits, if eligible; or is
actively engaged in the insurance business as a producer and who represents or operates
through a licensed Louisiana insurer. In order to be considered for this waiver,
you must complete
Form 65A.
The number of hours to be completed every two years for license renewal is:
Life - 16 hours
Life with P & C - 12 hours
P & C - 24 hours
P & C with Life - 20 hours
Bail Bond - 12 hours
Claims Adjuster - 24 hours
Public Adjuster - 24 hours
One half of required hours must be classroom attendance. Producers may carry over 10 hours of P & C and 6 hours of Life, Health and Accident. Proof of completion of Continuing Education must be completed by state approved provider and submitted with renewal on Appendix 5.
Duplicate License
Request for a duplicate license must be submitted in writing with a $15 fee to the
Insurance Department.
Duplicate Photo License
Request for a duplicate photo license must be done by filling out the form to request
duplicate photo license. This form may be downloaded from the
Prometric website. Fee for a duplicate photo license is $30.
Change of Address
Louisiana law requires all producers to notify the Insurance Department of any change
of address within ten days by using NIPR or
Change of Address Form.
Failure to notify the Insurance Department of address change will be charged $50 address fine. ALL CORRESPONDENCE
FROM THE DEPARTMENT WILL BE MAILED TO THE MAILING ADDRESS ON FILE.

However, the Department will still continue to accept written requests for paper letters of certification along with the $3.00 fee as we fully understand that some producers may not have access to technology.
