How Do I: File a Complaint

Have questions or concerns about your insurance company? The Louisiana Department of Insurance can help you find answers. The process is as easy as filing a complaint online. Here are a few documents you should have handy before preparing to file a complaint:

  • Insurance card
  • Insurance information including claim number, insurance company name or agent’s name
  • Policy information

LDI staff will provide you with an acknowledgement letter within a week of receiving your complaint. The average complaint usually takes about 45 days to fully investigate depending on the case. You can click here to watch a video on How to File a Complaint.

LDI Recovers Millions for Policyholders

As a result of complaints filed, the Louisiana Department of Insurance has helped policyholders recover $7.6 million dollars in 2016. The funds are in addition to the original amounts offered to consumers by their insurance companies. Our Office of Consumer Services works to resolve formal complaints regarding everything from homeowners and auto insurance to health and life insurance.

A new web feature is now available to help you search and view complaints filed with the department against companies who write insurance in Louisiana. The LDI wants to help you make informed decisions when choosing an insurance company.  For more information log on to www.ldi.la.gov/complaintdata.

Covering the Cost of Long-Term Care

Understanding your options is key when trying to decide if long-term care insurance is right for you. Long-term care helps individuals with activities of daily living, home health care, and assisted living care. Your age, health status, income, and retirement goals can help you assess whether you should buy a policy. Here are a few things to remember when shopping for long-term care insurance:

  • Shop Around. Pay attention to price and benefits.
  • Do your Research. Get an idea of how much you can afford to pay.
  • Review the Policy. Read the outline of coverage carefully and ask questions.

Our Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) staff can help answer questions you may have about long-term care. You can also check out our information guide.
