Louisiana Department of Insurance Receives High Marks in New Report
Commissioner Jim Donelon said he is pleased but not surprised with the high ranking given to the Louisiana Department of Insurance (LDI) in a recent report evaluating the integrity of state governments and their ability to prevent corruption among state officials and employees. “The State Integrity Investigation Corruption Risk Report Card” was issued for each of the 50 states as a joint project of The Center for Public Integrity, Global Integrity and Public Radio International. The LDI received a B+ ranking and was the top insurance department among the South Central states, according to the study.
The state insurance regulatory agencies were judged on a series of questions, including, “Does the state insurance commission have sufficient capacity to carry out its mandate?” and “Are there conflicts of interest regulations covering members of the board or senior staff of the state insurance commission?” The LDI scored a 100 percent on both of those questions.
Commissioner Donelon said while the state of Louisiana has a checkered political history, the LDI has had a long and exemplary track record of balancing the needs of consumers with those of the insurance industry. “Our mandate is to enforce the insurance laws and regulations of Louisiana impartially, honestly and expeditiously with the highest ethical and professional standards,” said Donelon. “We do this on a daily basis while protecting the consumers of the insurance products we regulate, and quite frankly, it isn’t that hard to do when your employees are committed to operating one of the best insurance regulatory agencies in the country,” Donelon added.
